Advocating for technology small businesses

Advocating for technology small businesses

2020-11-24

Supply chain sustainability may be a determining factor in recovering small businesses.  Many large businesses with established supply chains and resources have the tools to present the effectiveness of their supply chains to regulators and lawmakers.  However, small businesses may not have the resources to present their cases regarding supply chains.  Lyons, Reader, and Stephan (2017) explain how the lack of lobbying resources available to small and medium enterprises may prevent them from being able to influence governance concerning supply chains.

One of the areas where small businesses may require lobbying efforts is in technology.  Small businesses employ the same communication technologies as large companies and may be misrepresented in areas such as throttling of network bandwidth, information security requirements, and data privacy regulations.  Many of the regulations that large companies can easily navigate, take small businesses time to develop the services necessary to meet new requirements.  One example of these challenges for small businesses is in offering cable broadband services.  Blevins (2019) compares the emergence of cable broadband service to a utility service with little competition because of the large requirements to enter the field of delivering the service.
